Bummed out because you're a lowly Xbox Live Silver member that can't play the Halo Reach Beta? Well, some good news on that front from the big wigs at Microsoft. Starting May 14th and lasting 3 days, XBL Silver members will be able to play the Halo Reach Beta with their copy of ODST.
That should make all 3 people that own ODST but don't have a gold account pretty happy.
We've been getting lots of emails from folks that were promised Halo Reach Beta invites by Microsoft in thanks to all their years of loyal service playing Halo 2. While we ODST owners have been enjoying the beta for near 20 hours now, the Halo 2 folks are still left waiting, and wanting.
The good news is that Microsoft has begun sending out those beta codes, so some of you may already have them. The bad news is that they've said that due to the large number of them it may take several days before they are all dispersed. So for now refreshing your email inbox is your only option other than purchasing ODST.
Seen this error a few too many times? Well, you're not alone. With the influx of new players into the Halo Reach beta many are coming across "Loading information from the Halo: Reach Server" and "Server not Available" errors. You're not doing anything wrong, the servers are just overloaded. I'm afraid the only fix for this is more time, while Bungie works to get things straightened out. They are aware of the issue and are working on it.
The servers are going up and down, so if you keep trying you should eventually get into a game but there are going to be a lot of failed attempts on the way.
I guess that's why this is a beta, and not a demo, huh?
[Update 5/4] Everything seems to be fixed now, the matchmaking was working great last night.
What are you still doing here? The Halo Reach Beta is LIVE! To start your download just boot up your ODST campaign disc and the option to "Play the beta" will appear where the "extras" menu normally is.
Now get the heck off this website and go play!
We've been getting lots of emails this morning from distressed ODST owners freaking out that they still don't have an option to play the beta. Well, the good and bad news is that the beta isn't quite out yet even though today is May 3rd.
We contacted Bungie to try and get an exact release time, but unfortunately they couldn't give that to us. The best they could say is "late morning pacific time". With that, we're going to guess the beta will launch sometime around noon pacific time, which would put it around 3pm EST, and around 8-9pm if you live in the UK.
Just a little while longer folks, and we'll be able to dig our teeth into Halo Reach.
We already knew that the beta would start tomorrow, May 3rd, and now we know how long we'll all be enjoying it for. The beta will run for 17 days, and end on May 19th. That's going to leave a long, painful wait from that day until September when the full game launces, but at least these next two and a half weeks will be pure gaming bliss to satiate our hunger. And hey, at least we can all take solice in the fact that the beta STARTS TOMORROW!!!
Remember, you need a copy of Halo 3:ODST to get into the beta. If you still don't have it, it's not too late as you can still order it on Amazon or rent it with a free gamefly trial. But you'd better hurry!
At this point everyone knows the official release date for the Halo Reach Beta is May 3rd. But did you know that you can actually get into the Beta a week early, and without ODST?
Bungie has recently handed out a small number of beta keys that will give people access to the beta on April 29th, five days before everyone else. If you'll recall, April 29th was actually the date we predicted for the start of the beta earlier this year. So, while we pat ourselves on the back out here, you guys go ahead and click 'Read More' to get details on how you can try and get one of these early access keys.
Bungie just dropped a live action short to promote the Halo Reach Beta. It's not as good as the ODST one released last year, but still worth a look. It's embedded in HD after the break.
How do I join the Halo Reach Beta? Do current copies of ODST still get access to the beta? Do used copies? Rented copies? What will be available to play in the beta?
Fret not, young Spartans, for we have all the answers for you. Check out our full Halo Reach Beta FAQ after the break to get all your most pertinent questions about the beta answered in one convenient place.
Last week we reported on how the Halo Reach controls are going to mess you up. Well, good news folks. As expected, there will be several controller setups, all of which will be available in the beta. Fan favorites "Bumper Jumper" and "Green Thumb" return, among others. We've got the full list, and the layout of each, after the break.
